The Chamber of Accounts of the Republic of Azerbaijan recalled the cherished memory of the Martyrs who perished for the freedom and sovereignty of our nation as a result of insertion of Special Forces of Soviet Army to Azerbaijan on the night of 19 to 20 January, 1990.
In the commemorative event it was noted that, the 20th January is one of the most glorious and at the same time the bloodiest pages of history struggling for freedom of Azerbaijan conducting nationwide struggle for independence and sovereignty.
28 years ago, on bloody January days massacre was committed against civilians fighting for independence and sovereignty of Azerbaijan and it was the crime against nationalism, national values and humanity.
By the instruction of the totalitarian regime 137 civilians were killed, 744 wounded, 841 were illegally arrested, 200 houses, 80 cars including ambulance cars, a large amount of private and state property were destroyed, state property was hugely damaged. Among the killed were representatives of five nations, more than 20 women and children.
But all the attempts of the criminal regime couldn't break our nation's resolve for struggle. 20 January was the beginning of national awakening, self-esteem, progress towards independence of Azerbaijani people and continued till the end.
In the ceremony it was also noted that, on those days when information blocked Azebaijan couldn’t convey its voice of truth to the international community great patriot Heydar Aliyev who lived in Moscow at that time but loved his nation and homeland with all his heart was one of the first to support his nation despite obstacles.
The next day Great Leader Heydar Aliyev together with his family went to the Azerbaijan Represenative in Moscow and made a strong statement in front of journalists condemning the bloody massacre, and conveyed this calamity to the world.
The ones who witnessed the events and now as the employees of the Chamber of Accounts shared their memories on those tragic days, struggle against huge army fighting against unarmed people with the most terrible weapons of mass destruction on those days, and invincible will of our nation were talked about.
It was noted that , 20 January is the symbol of the struggle of our nation for sovereignty and freedom, and is a day of proud and honour of sons struggling against tanks and weapons.
Speakers at the event mentioned that, after nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev returned to power, a political and legal assessment of the 20 January events was given in 1994, and the names of criminals who ordered massacre and lead it were made public, this aggression against our country was regarded as a criminal act consciously planned in advance and brutally implemented.
It was noted that, our government and nation do everything not to forget 20 January, and to avoid its repetition.
According to the instruction of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan “The action plan to commemorate 25th anniversary of 20 January tragedy” approved every year, appropriate organizations are held in the cities and rayons of the republic, and in order to attract world attention to the tragedy events are held in the embassies, diplomatic missions and diasporas of Azerbaijan in foreign countries, information on 20 January tragedy are given in the leading mass media of the world, in TV channels and web sites.
According to the instruction and orders of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan the issues regarding state care to the families of martyrs sacrificing their lives for the independence of the homeland and ensuring their social welfare are kept in attention.
It was also mentioned that, politically and economically, socially and military strengthening of rapidly developing Azerbaijan creates reliable ground for the protection of state independence. The Chamber of Accounts of the Republic of Azerbaijan as the institution that controls state funds will support the policy implemented by the President by executing the best of its duties in this area as well as in all areas.
